The REGI program focuses on two Presidential Initiatives–Feed the Future (FTF) and Global Climate Change (GCC)–and incorporates complementary work implementing the African Competitiveness and Trade Expansion (ACTE) Initiative in intra-regional and export trade, investment, and regional integration. Regional Water and biodiversity conservation programming complete the REGI portfolio.
USAID/East Africa’s 2011-2015 strategy for Feed the Future (FTF) builds on eight years of results and experience with the Initiative to End Hunger in Africa, the Global Food Security Response, and the works closely with Afri-can regional organizations and other donors to achieve joint goals: to sus-tainably reduce chronic hunger, raise the incomes of the rural poor, and reduce the number of children suffering from under-nutrition. The regional results of activities supported by USAID/EA contribute to the objectives of the Africa-led Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Program (CAADP) and the living in extreme poverty and suffering from hunger by 2015.
The region served by the USAID/East Africa (EA) Mission continues to face daunting health challenges including rapid population growth; high rates of maternal and child morbidity and mortality; and a high burden of infectious diseases. Furthermore, each country experiences health systems challenges that hinder the government’s capacity to meet the health needs of its most vulnerable populations. African leaders and Global Health experts alike recognize the fundamental necessity of regional approaches to health sector development. They also recognize that Health sector development, both regionally and nationally, is dependent on sustainable solutions to health systems strengthening.
The USAID/EA Regional Conflict Management and Governance (RCMG) program works to promote stability along the borders of Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia. RCMG supports cross-border peace networks, and is building the capabilities of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s (IGAD) Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism (CEWARN).
Based in Nairobi, USAID/East Africa (USAID/EA) provides assistance across borders, supporting innovative regional programs.
