The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), led by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), today released its tenth annual report, documenting progress across its programs including in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded $42.75 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), contributing to food assistance for more than 1.6 million vulnerable people in conflict-affected parts of the country.

More than 4,500 small-scale coffee farmers supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are attracting international buyers and making sales to American coffee companies including Starbucks, Counter Culture Coffee and Sweet Maria’s. On March 22, Starbucks launches a high-quality South Kivu coffee supplied by these farmers at nearly 1,500 stores across the United States and Canada, and on Starbucks.com.

On Feb. 4, Congolese authorities seized approximately 30kg of ivory tusks and ornaments in two separate operations in Kinshasa, confiscating processing equipment and arresting several traffickers. The USAID-funded international organization World Wildlife Fund (WWF), in partnership with national non-governmental organizations, helped authorities follow the wildlife trafficking network for some time before the arrests.
