Remarks by Sean Callahan, Deputy Mission Director, USAID Cambodia, Program Launch for Early Grade Reading Support to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport
May 31, 2017

I appreciate that I am looking out across a broad set of people and organizations who have committed themselves to work towards a common goal to help Cambodian children get a better education. When USAID began looking into supporting the Ministry of Education in early grade reading, we were impressed with all of the work that has been done to help children learn to read. I want to salute the Ministry on the efforts and progress made to date in advancing early grade reading.

These periodic surveys of HIV behavior and prevalence have been very influential for programming. They provide us with the latest data on progress as well as show us gaps in HIV prevention, testing, and treatment. As you may recall, the 2010 survey had a great impact on the shape of USAID HIV programming.

The passing of this new law marks an important milestone. It demonstrates Cambodia’s commitment to strengthening health professions and ensuring the quality of health services around the country. It will also help the Councils by strengthening their partnership with the Ministry of Health, health development partners, and you, representatives from the garment factories and private sector.
