In November 2012, international and local consultants from the USAID funded Azerbaijan Competitiveness and Trade (ACT) Project conducted a workshop on the “Use of Technology Equipped Cold Storage Management” in Guba. Nineteen farmers and other private sector representatives participated in the Workshop.

The purpose of the workshop was to provide managers of cold chain facilities and other interested parties with operational skills and knowledge on using technology as part of the management process. The workshop also provided recommendations on mechanical systems for making required improvements. Participants were introduced to SmartFresh technology--–the latest development in packaging and storage technology. This new technology allows user to significantly stretch the sellable life of fruits and vegetables without compromising quality. SmartFresh representatives informed participants that the company has already introduced their technology in four pilot cold storage facilities for apples and persimmons in the Guba-Khachmaz regions.

The advantage of this new technology is its low cost which is calculated against volumes. What this means to the farmers is nearly a double digit increase in revenues as a direct result of storing the products for a longer period of time, and at a much higher quality for a fractional cost.

In addition, USAID experts emphasized proper handling techniques preceding the storage phase and that compliance with good agricultural practices is the cornerstone of successful production, storage and sales.

This workshop is a part of USAID’s efforts to support the expansion and strengthening of targeted agricultural value chains.
