On April 11, 2012, “Uluchay” Social-Economic Innovation Center, USAID’s local partner implementing the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) in north-west Azerbaijan, organized training on Volunteer Recruitment in Sheki (186 miles from capital Baku). Ten young men and six young women from Sheki and the neighboring Zagatala district participated.
This training was part of a series of USAID-supported trainings in Baku, Sheki, Guba, Ganja and Lenkaran. Others in the series include effective leadership, civic activism, social media tools, gender equality, public speaking, communication, strategic planning, proposal writing, and project management.
The participants actively discussed volunteerism and its principles and learned how to involve and manage volunteers in different civic activities. They also had an opportunity to participate in group activities as part of discussions of strategies for recruitment of volunteers.
“At this training I learned how to recruit volunteers and better understood the principles of volunteerism,” expressed one of the participants of the training.
The main goal of the ELP is to promote civic and political involvement and enhance engagement of youth in decision-making and problem-solving at the local level. The program works with 185 young leaders, including young women, to strengthen their leadership, civic and political organizing skills. It will also support them in identification, design and implementation of civic projects in their communities. Each program participant will engage other young people as volunteers to multiply the program results.
The program will also contribute to further capacity development of the implementing organizations through a number of targeted training sessions on organizational development and financial management.
