Future economic impacts of climate change in the Lower Mekong Basin are likely to be wide-ranging and could top $30 billion annually, according to a new report by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Of most concern are potentially significant reductions in the yield of crops, fish and non-timber forest products critical for livelihoods, damage to infrastructure associated with floods and sea level rise, and an increase in the incidence and severity of heat-related illnesses for workers.
Summary of the Sustainable Mekong Energy Initiative: RDMA is considering designing a project to support Lower Mekong countries to direct current and future investment toward environmentally-friendly renewable energy and energy efficiency, leading to significantly reduced or avoided greenhouse gas emissions.
"Being LGBT in Asia” is a ground-breaking, first-of-its-kind initiative to support Asia’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. It works to bolster basic LGBT rights across the continent and in specific focus countries including China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. In 2014, the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok, through the section for Regional Development Cooperation, joined the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a lead funding partner, raising the profile of regional organizations and institutions in addressing LGBT rights issues. The program will be implemented through 2017.
