Today, Donald “Larry” Sampler Jr., was sworn in as Assistant to the Administrator in the Office of Afghanistan and Pakistan Affairs.  In this role, Sampler will oversee the two countries with the largest USAID budgets in a region critical to U.S. national security.  USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah administered the oath.

Partnership reveals improved maternal health outcomes in Uganda and Zambia pilot districts

The number of women dying during pregnancy and childbirth declined sharply over one year in eight pilot districts in Uganda and Zambia where Saving Mothers, Giving Life has deployed a battery of life-saving interventions, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-led public-private partnership announced today. The first annual report, a comprehensive evaluation of the initiative’s efforts to strengthen health systems and reduce the number of preventable maternal deaths, revealed a 30 percent decrease in the maternal mortality ratio in target districts of Uganda and a 35 percent reduction in target facilities in Zambia in its first year.

The United States announced $49.8 million in additional humanitarian assistance to help victims of conflict in South Sudan.  With this new assistance, the United States has provided more than $300 million in humanitarian assistance in Fiscal Years 2013 and 2014 to assist South Sudanese victims of conflict as well as refugees seeking asylum in South Sudan.

Two Firms to Receive Support to Expand Agricultural Productivity and Improve Food Security

The African Development Banks’s Agriculture Fast Track Fund (AFT), a new multi-donor trust fund created to increase agricultural productivity and reduce poverty, recently announced the recipients of the Fund’s first two project preparation grants. The project preparation grants will help attract investment in agricultural infrastructure projects in Cote d’Ivoire and Tanzania while strengthening links from farmers to markets to tables across Africa.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Rajiv Shah and Dr. John Clarke, President and CEO of the Banro Corporation, announced a $4 million partnership today to help formalize legal, conflict-free artisanal gold mining at the Banro mining site in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  The partnership will increase transparency and sustainability while also supporting economic opportunities for community residents and informal miners.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Swedish Government, Duke Energy Corporation, the German Government, and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, announced the 12 organizations that will collectively receive $13 million in funding under Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development.  The awards will support innovative projects aimed at integrating clean energy technology into the agriculture sectors of developing countries.

USAID Chief Scientist Dr. Alex Dehgan announced the awards at an event at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars where participants discussed how innovative technology can address violence.
