The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) organized today a conference on introducing a mobile payments platform in Albania to enhance financial inclusion. The conference focused on the introduction of a universal mobile money payment platform in Albania, in particular on the opportunities that this technology would bring in the Albanian market. The conference also highlighted obstacles that will need to be addressed for it to be successful.
The event brought together key stakeholders in the payments industry including banks, non-bank financial institutions, mobile network operators, government representatives, public utility companies, and regulators. Financial Services Volunteer Corps experts provided valuable insight on the latest global developments in the mobile payment technology as well as an evaluation of the implementation possibilities from the Albanian perspective. Following presentations, open discussions provided an opportunity for all stakeholders to share their views on the topic.
This is an important step to achieve an open, interoperable mobile payments platform to facilitate financial inclusion in Albania, by providing universal access to affordable financial services to Albanian citizens. Through this innovative technology, USAID intends to promote ready access to payment services for unbanked citizens, enabling them to pay their utility bills and other recurring financial obligations through their own mobile devices.
