New Delhi, India – In an effort to strengthen commercial and economic ties between Afghanistan and India through trade and investment, the Governments of India and Afghanistan, along with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), opened the first “Passage to Prosperity: India-Afghanistan Trade and Investment Show”. The event brings together more than 200 representatives from Afghan companies and more than 800 Indian participants to forge new business connections and discuss potential investment opportunities.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled (MOLSAMD) celebrated the launch of a new mobile application that is designed to help Afghan women and girls cope with street harassment.  Three young Afghan women developed the Smartphone app, called Muhafiz, in response to a competition sponsored by Code Weekend, the largest Afghan software developer, at the request of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) sponsored an exhibition of Afghan products on October 18, 2016 to facilitate sales and acquaint the manufacturing companies with products and services available in the city. An estimated 100 business representatives and local government officials attended the exhibition.

USAID, in collaboration with UNICEF and the Ministry of Public Health, conducted a one-day symposium on October 16, 2016 to share best approaches for reducing maternal mortality in Afghanistan.  The symposium explored the prevention, detection, and management of Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) and Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia (PEE) at medical facilities and at the community level. PPH and PEE are the main causes of maternal mortality in Afghanistan.

The United States Government and the Ministry of Finance of Afghanistan signed a letter for the disbursement of $100 million to the National Unity Government (GNU) for reaching milestones under the New Development Partnership (NDP).  As part of the ongoing commitment by the U.S Government to improve the welfare of the Afghan people, the release of these funds is tied to the Afghan government’s achievement of specific development results and implementation of key policy reforms, including improved revenue collection, reducing corruption and reducing poverty by helping the poor and marginalized, especially women.

Expected to draw more than 1,500 traders and buyers, the event will help raise awareness of Afghan jewelry and forge business ties between Afghanistan and India.

Kabul, Afghanistan – On August 28 and 29, 2016, Mayors from Afghanistan’s 33 provincial capital municipalities are coming together for the Second Annual National Mayors’ Conference in Kabul.  Funded by USAID through its Strong Hubs for Afghan Hope and Resilience (SHAHAR) project, the conference is the follow-on to the First Annual National Mayors’ Conference.  Afghanistan’s Independent Directorate for Local Governance (IDLG) and its Deputy Ministry of Municipalities (DMM) hosted both conferences.
